Help please

Retro Newbie
Hi folks,

Got myself an old viking road bike which needs some help. My starting point is going to be the rims and tyres.

Now looking at the tyres these are marked up as 28 x 630 - Was going to replace but think i am going to refurb as best i can.

What tyre size do i need and how can i clean these bad boys up (lots of rust)

Thanks guys

are they chromed?

If they are and there is a lot of pitting, and you're going all out on the restoration, you will likely need to have them rechromed to get them looking like new.

I have been told steel. TBH, its not all out restoration, just bring her back to life and turn some heads

Depending how deep, and of it isn't chromed, I would rub it down with wet and dry and move up through the grits up to about 600 and then metal polish.

cheers,

I will try and get some before/after pics

BITD when dealt with bikes with rusty old rims I used a suede brush which is essentially a fine wire brush. Finish of with some autosol and they always looked great.

Any pics or description of the bike :)

At the mention of the word Viking, all I can think about is Sid Barras who rode for the Viking Campagnolo Team back in the 70's and had a column in Cycling Weekly...... Didn't rate him :D

I'd start with 0000 grade steel wool dipped in oil, but it really depends how bad they are and how much time you want to spend.

Another way is to leave them soaking in a concentrate of Oxalic Acid, you can find it on Ebay. The problem with wheels is you need a big container to soak the whole wheel in one go.
