Hi, I need to replace my exage 500lx groupset but being a newbie to this forum have not a clue which way to turn.

I need a new chainset mainly with bottom bracket. Tried looking on chain reaction cycles but no idea what I am looking for.
Advice please on what the specs for my Dynatech Sentinel are and how I can find a replacement.
Have searched the forums for the Sentinel but no specs .

are you just looking to replace (same stuff), upgrade to better stuff or just replace with new stuff (same level, but new)?

local shop

Hi and thanks for replies.

the local shop is useless. I have tried two, one Real Cycles who were absolutely useless. Didnt even bother to try and fix it or help. The other said they couldnt look at it for weeks and is it really worth it?

I would like to upgrade if possible to Deore but real hard to find such components.

Will follow links given.
Cheers

If I were you I'd replace the worn out gear with period kit. You should be able to find early 90's LX, DX etc with plenty of life left in it on here for far less then you'd pay for new modern kit. If you want to replace it with 500LX then all the better because you can pick that up for buttons. :D

I work over in northern Ireland a lot and can tell you that places like Real or Chainreaction only stock the newer kit.
If you want to replace with 500LX then you're better off posting in the "Wanted" section of this forum, or keeping an eye out on ebay. You should be able to get hold of what you need for not much money.
If you want you could widen your search a bit and look for the same parts in DX/LX/XT from around the same period, again they should be fairly easy to get a hold of.
If you want to upgrade to more modern kit then you'll have to think about replacing the chainset & bottom bracket together, as Shimano has changhed their designs a few times over the years.

can you show us a pic of what you have now? and a better idea of what you'd like to replace it with?

newer kit

cheers for replies... Just taking my son to swimming then cinema will take some photos and post when get back

If you wanted to overhall with modern stuff then you'll not go far wrong with the Deore 2010 groupset, availabel from MerlinCycles for ~£200, that's v-brakes and drivetrain set.
You may need a new real wheel though as it's likely your wheel s for a 7 speed cassette, so at which point it's not really worth it imho.

So just spruce it up and give it a new fresh cable set Clarks and Jagwire do some nice ones.
A new chain might help out as well and some brake blocks.
