Help! Need to buy a PC today advice needed. Dead desktop

i5 is a bit faster, has more cache.

The thing with the different iWhatever intel chips is they start with the most expensive, and defective ones get sold under cheaper names. So Xeon is the "proper" one at ££££££, then the ones that don't meet that level of quality control get called i7, the ones that aren't good enough to be i7s get labeled i5, and so on and so on. A bit like car trim levels.

But it's 2014 by the inch of its teeth. So even something like an i3 is more than fast enough to get anything done, unless you're a mad scientist.

So stick with i3 and see what's the most RAM and hard disc space you can get for your money. 4GB ram is okay, for now, but in a couple years will seem cramped.

If you can find one with Windows 7 still, get it. Windows 8 is painful. It is a tablet operating system they've put on pc / laptop, and is shit IMO

from what I can tell win 8 is the same as 7 but with added touch feature, takes about 30min to get used to it, you also get to use apps

I f***ing hate apps. Windows 8 reduces useability against 7. You get apps, but if I wanted apps, I'd have bought a tablet. I want the full fat, not the "diet" version used by apps.

No, I had the same issue as you a couple of months ago. The Acer was one I considered, as it was recommended to me by a mate who works in IT, but I went for a reconditioned Sony Vaio in the end. I downloaded "classic shell" to get the start button back, and some useage. It's been better since. I also downloaded desktop version of Skype so I don't have to use the stupid app. You can do everything you could do, just useability is much worse.

If i can run it in safe mode why can't i get anything else to work? just copied the 'my documents' to a 16gb dongle.

just trying to reinstall windows XP but once bitten ....... Dell Dimension 8400 desktop

"The Dell Dimension 8400 offers exciting hardware and a glimpse of the future.." Well that was 2004. If the future is crashing just when you need it before work on monday, count me out.
