Help, my back end is stuck! (GT LTS)

Hi all,

I'm trying to remove the rear end from my Team LTS. I've run into a couple of small problems and I need a bit of advice please:

1. The bottom pivot (joining the chainstay to the front triangle) is stuck. I've removed the bolt, but cannot remove the 2 'cups' (one on each side of the frame).

2. The bolt that holds the bottom of the shock in is stuck. It looks as if one of the 'spacers' that sits next to the bottom of the shock has seized itself to the bolt, so it won't slide out.

3. Both of the seatstay/chainstay pivot bolts are seized solid. They pivot freely, but I cannot undo them to separate the seatstay and chainstay. It looks as if these bolts are very similar to chainring bolts in their design.

I will be replacing all of the bushes etc. with a BETD roller bearing kit, so I don't mind if the existing ones get damaged on their way out. In fact, a number of the existing bushes are knackered anyway.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks :)

Hi bud, I've just rebuilt my lts 5000, bolt wise, use a centre punch to knock through from the otherside, spray wd40 on before and let soak in...
My cups were the same, wd40 inside, then I used a long socket, I think a 18-19mm that sat inside, a good hit with a rubber mallet pushed both of them through the otherside, I painted the cone section on assembly, and used plenty of good quality grease on all joints, mine is as smooth as silk now....hope that helps...

Oh and chainstay bolt requires a socket one end and an Allen key the other, you can't get to it without removing crank, I didn't realise until I removed it, there both designed to spin, so don't overtighten when rebuilding..okz

Thanks for the replies :)

I've managed to get all of the bolts etc out now, apart from the 2 bloody cones that are sat each side of the main bottom pivot.

The cones are currently bathing in WD40 in the hope that it'll loosen them up a bit. I don't really have any idea how to get them out if they don't free themselves though. I can't punch them out from the other side.

I'm not bothered about damaging them as I'm getting a complete new bearing kit from BETD to rebuild it with. I just don't want to damage the frame!

As I told you above it's crank off job buddy, there is no other way around it, then they will via the method above....

Sorry - not sure if I've explained myself properly  - the frame is completely stripped. There are no parts on it. I can get to the bottom pivot easily enough and I've removed the bolt but the cups in each side won't budge and I can't punch them out from the other side, as there's nothing for the punch to connect with, if that makes sense?

No I know, use a socket from ur socket set, a long one best, then rubber mallet the socket, they both will pop out...job sorted buddy, that's how I did it, no damage, simples

Got a pic?

It's not the actual pivot (I found this pic on Google), but it's the same one. Like I said, I've got the bolt out of it, but can't remove the cups from each side:

I'm still not sure how I'll get it out with a long socket - mind you that's probably down to me being dull more than anything :?

Right, bolt out, you can see fresh air, in the picture above you can see the silver coloured ring, that's the cone yes, outside of that is the fibre washer, its seated in,now get out your socket set, find the socket size that is exactly the same diameter as the silver ring, ie cone...give it a couple of taps to move it inside the fibre washer, then when your safely in, tap away, the 2 cones will pop out of the other end of the fibre washer ok??
