Guessing that the BB which was ok for your old cranks had spindle length of 119mm or more. So as mentioned above your new cranks probably require a spindle length of 110 - 113mm, allowing for their different profile. Great fun this retrobiking lark - learn quickly
Luckily you can get new BB for a tenner or so.........lots more if you feel flush.

replacement BB ordered. thanks again for all your comments. i also had a look on sheldon browns BB database and that was helpful.

so i've learned something which is good.

but i have to question myself replacing something which was working fine on a bike thats supposed to be an undesirable run around to the pub and back!

i fear i may be on the slippery slope to replacing the whole thing bit by bit, frame and all! :|
