aw bum. I was hoping maybe it'd jam in and centre it anyway?

your headset look like this?

the gold thing that you can see is what you need

whack a pic up of your headtube and headset..it'll be a lot easier to define which parts you need

doesn't look like that one - there's no bulges of any sort on the frame itself - it's a 94 kona lavadome, there's some pics of one at http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=75607
or same frame but a later model:

I'm converting from threaded to normal aheadset - the bottom crown race, bearings and cup are fine, but the top section used to have the threaded lockring thing above the top race; removing that to fit a non-threaded 1 1/8 steerer has meant there's some play in the top race, so I was hoping that sticking a compression ring in would do the trick.

you should be fine i think they are all much of a muchness, its an old style headset not semi integrated, i had two or three to choose from and they were exactly the same, stands a good chance that the one i sent came from an aheadset branded one that matched the tocap i sent, and would have been original equipment for that very nice lava dome

hmmm may be problematic then, mix and matching aheadset style should be cool, but not sure about mxing threaded and threadless parts, that frame is far too pretty for a botched headset IMO, should be getting a new headset today, and if so i have a good condition 99 version of an aheadset came on a GT in silvery grey i could send you for a few poond

oh and thats a 97 lava dome

ignore me i should learn to read

if the bike pictured in this thread is your bike then it is 97 , im all of a fuddle now :? :? :?

So you are trying to convert the Kona Impact headset I see in the pictures you link to, to a aheadset style one ?

You could either try the A:Daptor from M:Part, but it's designed for Shimano Cartridge headsets, or just buy a full headset say the M:part one or a Ritchey, shouldn't be too much. It will be better in the long run.I wouldn't bodge something in that way* that is quite fundamental to your survival on the bike.

*other ways yes

OK, I'll check it out when the bits turn up - I've removed all threaded parts and the remaining original top race looks exactly like all other aheadset bearing races I've seen/constructed, so I don't think it'll be too mix-n-match.

I'll keep you posted tho - very happy to payap gift if the kit turns out to be incompatible.

Edit: Charlieboy - sorry for the confusion, mine's a 94 lava dome, I was just looking for a pic of the head tube - ignore that pic!

it all makes sense now :D

are you changing your forks?
do they have a long enough steerer for the frame/headset/stem and topcap to sit on?
are 94 kona's 1" or 1 1/8th?

once you've answered these questions, its easy

if it's yes and 1 1/8th then all you need is a standard aheadset

1) yes, different forks
2) yes, nice long steerer, will even need shims
3) 1 1/8th
4) Yep, realise that. Standard aheadset is expensive (compared to free), all I need is the compression collar to keep the top race in place.

If it works and is compatible without fudging, happy days. If it doesn't then I'll have to splash out.

Cash is an issue here; if it wasn't I wouldn't have started the thread!!
