Halfords and service plans

Now I know many in here are anti halfords but I find in general like most places there are good and bad bike mechanics and yes whilst halfords does seem to have it's share of spotty oiks..they do have some decent people also

Now..They do a cycle service plan for a year that works out as £17.99
this covers a annual service, any maintenance work and free labour also should you buy the parts from them. It also covers free fine tuning like wheel treuing, gear adjusts etc for those of us..and I count myself in on this..who just do not feel confident on doing some things on the bike

so why mention this? as some of us who are not confident on some aspects of build and set up, there is the tool cost to consider when you do self build/maintenance a wheel truer, a crank extractor etc..add those to the cost of the bits to replace and suddenly it seems exspensive

there is a down side to this plan as it only applys to you and that particular bike you register

so why mention it today?

I over heard and checked to confirm that this annual service plan is half price till the end of february at £8.99

so if your local halfords is okay, has a good bike mechanic and you want someone else to do things..might be worth a pop down, confirm half price offer till the end of feb and make your mind up if it's for you?

and no I don't work at halfords but I do like value for money :D

I guess the downside is they will tell you that you need new wheels, chainset, cassette, chain etc etc for them to be able to make your bike go well. Most uf us will fettle the wheels and put a bit of spit and polish on it and have a running bike. To be fair to them, they have to make their money somehow and would we really expect a halfords mechanic to clean crud off chainrings?

I can't see how they could offer this price. It is a loss leader to get people in I suppose. Could be value for money for those who know their apples.

The biggest problem would be that they would want to repair with their parts which wouldn't really work with our retrobikes. If you have a modern under £200 bike then it could be worthwhile I suppose.

id be happy to pay that to get my wheel strued
even if its just once
but will they do a decent job of it? :?

I once had them rebuild a wheel. The branch local to me did a fine job.

As mentioned before - how do you know if you get a correct diagnosis? A sticky gear cable could also be seen as knackered shifters/ mech/ chain rings and so on.

Does fitting your own parts invalidate warranties and so on?

I'd be very wary.

The down side is ,after theyve done their service you have to do own of your own to make sure they havent messed any of it up.
Inspires confidence eh?
Not

Popped in to local halfords this evening for some muc-off bike spray. Had a look round and noticed they have a display cabinet of shimano bits and bobs. Very over priced, I would say double CRC for even low end kit. For example, SPD cleats £19.99
