GT Backwoods 96 Flame

Hello All,

Here is my current project, it was bought a few years ago as a cheap local ebay bargain. My first proper MTB was a similar GT Talera with the awesome Team Scream paint job around 96/97. Sadly that frame (Talera) cracked and was replaced with a 98 model in orange, which was a lot less desirable and ended up being given to my mum!

This bike been in little service since, only a few rides here and there. The Alivio crankset was pretty gunked up when I got the bike, so some newer forged jobbies are on there presently until the real build gets going.

Plans are to bring the spec up to LX/XT level from around that time not strictly 96 but those few years after. I have mk1 LX V's ready to go on. Also plan to go 8sp with a similar set of wheels to whats there at the moment (silver mavics/shimano).

I'd love a set of Judy SLs but they are in high demand so I currently have a slightly newer fork to go on in a similar hue. Maybe some quadra 21's if they present themselves who knows! I still have the WTB tyres, but have some tioga's on there at the moment.

So this is not so much a build thread as a tinkering and upgrade thread.

Anyway I'm enjoying reading the threads and im sorry i didnt come here sooner. Everyone I have dealt with buying bits so far have been ace!

A few things have been replaced, the forks may stay around for a bit, mainly for aesthetic reasons. IMO gt’s need rock shox but Judy SL’s in rideable form are a little out of build budget right now. The aim is to have LX/XT mix with a sprinkling of other bits if an opportunity arises. Wheels will be some navy mavic 222 on 36h hubs (yet to be sourced).
Gone are the Alivio sti’s and cantis, alivio chainset, stx rear mech, GT flip flop stem, cheap wellgo pedals and WTB velociraptors.

Next up is to reduce the amount of bounce at the front ideally down to 60-80mm and to find that unicorn xt 737/738/739 rear hub in 36h for the 222 rims I have sat in the garage.
May also have to put a flite saddle on there but the modern repro the originals are silly money for something that has been sat on for 20 years. I bought my 1st flite out of a bargain bucket for a fiver :-/

Love it! I had the tequesta with same flames paint job. I loved that bike, then I lent it to a friend who left it unlocked outside an amusement arcade-idiot and it wasn't seen again.

I very hard lesson learned there. My first GT was a team scream talera which sadly cracked. I only ever let one person borrow that bike. It was a girl in school in the year above on sports day.....!

Wheel update!!!

Navy/shadow mavic 222 rims have been laced by me into some shiny m737 xt hubs. And a blue flight found its way to me. Oooh and I put the wtb raptors back on!’

Latest update is the addition of my trusty Middleburn RS3. I got a new spider in silver and some middleburn/ blackspire epic chainrings. Lh taper is a bit worn so I’m not jumping on this!
