Retro Newbie
hello,
after years away of mtb im starting to get back into it, my weapon is the bike that's been sat in the garage for years, Im not sure what year it is I think about 2000.
everything is completely original, I started to look at other bikes or building a new one up etc but after a few rides I figured theres completely nothing wrong with this bike so why spend a grand or so on a bike that wouldn't actually make much if at all any quicker! I have however ordered a 2nd hand set of forks for it some marzocchi mx comps which should be here in a few days, after its first outing I had to get a new mech hanger chain and mech. at the same time I gave it some new cables, a new cassette has been put on and to be honest im really impressed, I think it needs a new bb and chainset and some pads but that should be fine

if theres any GT experts around could you tell me what type of BB I have? cant seem to find it on google

it's more than likely a square taper

not much info on bikepedia - clicky

so can't comment on shell width of spindle length. why out of interest do you think it needs a new BB?

Just makes the odd bit of noise creaks. At some point id like a new crankset so just would rather change it at the same time but im in no hurry.

got a problem with the chain slipping which I find strange as its a bew cassette and chain was new about 10miles before but maybe the chain got used to that cassette even in that short amount of time and I might need a new chain for this cassette

the new forks have arrived and ive chucked them on. Not ridden yet as ive still got to swap the brakes over but they look good and lets be honest thats all that really matyers! Makes the bike look much younger. Pic soon

definitely check the front rings for shark teeth if it's still slipping after new bits at the back.

you might want to have the crank arms off and check the BB is smooth. chances are it's the arms creaking against the spindles. give the inside of the arms (and i mean the little square holes) a really good clean with solvent and then soapy stuff and repeat on the spindle arms, apply a little grease and tighten them back on good and proper.
