Hi Guys,
I've been putting together a town bike for my father (he's very excited about it) but I'm have trouble with the rear shifting. Up front is a GripShift SRT 400 FFS 7-speed shifter, while out back I have a Shimano RD M739 mech and unidentified Shimano 7-speed cassette. Shifting is pi$$-poor and pretty random.
Is this combination doomed to failure from the outset due to cable pull mismatch? Or is it more likely to be due to one of the components being past its best? If the combination simply won't work and one needs to be replaced, I guess I'd be better ditching the GS - so which similar shifter would work? He wants GS-type, not thumbies or rapidfire.
Also, the freehub is on its last legs, probably its last leg in fact. The hub is an M732 model - are current Shimano freehub bodies backwards compatible with this hub? Which works best? Or do I need to look for a direct replacement?
Thanks in advance,
Gareth.
