Staying on topic "of the last 10 years".

7-Nation Army, definitely - though it's far from my favourite White Stripes track. Jack White is our time's greatest musical talent.

Others...

QOTSA "Noone Knows" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s88r_q7oufE&ob=av2e

The Hives "Hate to say I told you so". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCQ7VLoY7bQ (Power chord sequence as riff)

And if you want to see some old-style guitaring, Jack White again....

that last one is rather good i aint seen any the dead weathers stuff

What do you call "our time"?

If you want the most criminally ignored greatest musical talent in the last 35 years (definitely my time) it's Tim Smith of Cardiacs

Since 1977, Cardiacs have been cited as an influence by Damon Albarn, Mike Patton of Faith No More, The Darkness, System of a Down, Radiohead, Kaiser Chiefs and many more besides. The music is marmite on disc but you can't ignore the talent. If you want to describe it, try punk/prog. I won't post here but go to youtube and there are many vids posted there for your aural delectation; mostly grainy live shows.

If it sounds like I'm trying to sell this band, I am. Tim had a cardiac arrest (irony?) and has been recuperating for the last two years. Probably won't record again and definitely won't play live. They're not a massive band despite being so seminal so listen and buy (if you dare); the back catalogue is available on iTunes. It all helps the man.

Get well soon Tim

(Sorry for the thread hijack. Needed to get this one off my chest).

dbmtb - the riff I posted was Club Foot by Kasabian. Tis a bass riff through a fuzz pedal I believe. Rather good I think 8)

By "our time" I meant "here and now and still developing artistically". Jack White's creative energy is just insane.

Very aware of the Cardiacs. One of my other favorite guitarists (and former bike messenger and all round top bloke) Bic Hayes was in the Cardiacs before joining Levitation, who I am a huge fan of. Tim Smith produced their only album "Need for Not".

Saw them in 87 when I was at Uni and they were pretty amazing. "Big Ship" one of my all-time favorite tracks. Never got into their studio stuff but I do have their first live LP.

"One way ticket to hell" was better. The Darkness were indeed a beacon of light, joy and hilarious irony in a time where rock was in big danger of taking itself far too seriously.

+100 for The Hives - Hate to say I told you so...

Every time I hear that, no matter where I am or what im doing....I start to mosh.

That riff goes inside my ears, down to my rock soul, and shakes it till I cant help myself no more...

Seen The Hives serveral times in the last few years including a festival in Austria, and boy do they own the stage. every single time.
Even my missus loved the Brixton gig I dragged her to, and she is by no means rock'n'roll...

ABSO-FRICKIN-LUTELY-ROCK'N'ROLL-AT-ITS-HARD-HITTIN-BEST!

That's a great riff and I really like the band but I think that's just the Rolling Stoner in me

Kasabian have pulled of several excellent riffs in the last few years, and I agree that Jack White is one of the most creative guys out there.

I bet when Jack thinks thoughts in his head....they are thought as a riff. ''aaaa, pint of milk and some faags ,please'' daa da dada da daaa daaa...

I bet when he sneezes a riff comes fying out at 300mph

Couple of tracks from Heaven and Hell had some good riffs, Bible Black and Follow The Tears from the album The Devil You Know
