And now, I would appreciate some feedback - should I seek a control tech stem in silver, to match the post, or should I be looking for alternate matching post & stem, e.g. thompson, syncros etc

may I suggest an alternate stem and post, since control tech was a bit of a budget brand, for mass produced bikes. Though, it's a quality part.

I don't know if I'm on board with that assessment. Control Tech was closer to Syncros than to Zoom in my eyes. Zoom was the mass production brand stuff. Control Tech was starving college student meets avid mountain biker. Syncros was starving college student with a credit card.

As I recall...shop prices back in the day... $30 Zoom, $60 Control Tech and $80 for Syncros. There abouts... I'm partial to Control Tech. Good USA made no nonsense stuff.

Being a poor highschool/college student, I rarely shopped at the LBS for bike parts. So Nashbar and supergo prices were $15 Zoom, $30 Control Tech, and Syncros $60.

If I could afford a handmade boutique frame back then, I wouldn't be looking to put mid-tier or entry level parts on it.

Though I do agree, Control Tech made quality parts, just not high-end, and not much better than Zoom. Wasn't zoom stock on some M2 Stumpjumpers?

If it were mine I would go for a black ringle stem or colour match a Salsa roller stem with some rise. Ringle for a racer look, Salsa for a more relaxed all day rider.

No doubt Edwards had a zero rise 170mm stem on it being a masochist

Crikey, all this debate over control tech... FWIW, they were always nice safe kit BITD, where the sensible but not top money went. Just down from the CNC bling... And I like it...
