Was it because the bids were going up in £10 increments and the next bid would have been £345 which was above your max?

I wondered that - but if I had been sniping manually, the bid would have been accepted but had the winning bidder set his max bid higher the bid increment would have moved.

Basically Gixen (or possibly ebay) has done he seller out of some money because I always intended to bid higher than the winning bid.

It was especially narking as I came back to the auction screen and saw the winning bid - assumed I'd got a bargain only to find out I hadn't...

Gixen will give you the reason for it not sniping or why the snipe did not work.

If you always intended to bit higher than the max bid then you should have done it manually, gixen can not increment past the amount you put in or know in advance what that bid will will need to be.
All part of using a sniper tool
I assume it say's BID UNDER ASKING PRICE

Now Gixen work in $ iirc

you need to convert the increment types in to £ given here
http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/bid-increments.html so yes you're in the $10 range.
Ebays rules.
Easier to look here I guess though

I think stevek has it, the next bid would have to have been £345 or more, whether manually bid or snipe, ebay wouldn't accept any less than £345 for the next bid as the current bid was at £335. If the winning bidders bid had been placed before but not yet reached it's max, then your bid would have been accepted pushing theirs up more. If you are placing your bid after someone else you have to outbid them by at least the increment. If you place your bid first and they bid under yours but less than the increments, ebay will take your max bid.
Poorly worded that ..

No that makes sense... whoever got it probably put a lot more than my paltry £342 on it anyway!!

Anyone here get it?

Having seen what pace evo's go for, I'd say the lucky buyer would be able to more than recoup their outlay on those and the wheelset - leaving them with a stash of exceelent nick retro goodies...

I bet those x-lite stems go for money...

My plan was to put it all on to my team scream Bravado that I'm currently repainting...
