Ghost bikes…👻

Yes, just don’t ever go up the inside of a HGV, it’s a blind spot and they don’t feel a thing.

There are blind spots at the front too. HGV drivers can't see the ground immediately in front of their front window. Easy for cyclists to nip up the side, and then stop in front without being seen at all by the HGV driver when they start off. I was cycling through central London once, and the police were offering cyclists the chance to sit in the cab of a HGV. It was an illuminating and worthwhile experience - and really gave an appreciation of how difficult their job must be (and how crap it must be to accidentally injure or kill someone you had no way of seeing while doing your job). Basically with HGVs - stay well clear, and well back.

This was the ghost bike for my friend Matt Brenner in NYC, who was killed by a woman in a Tiguan looking at an ipad on the passenger seat at the time (2014). And it got run over in 2019.
