TBH I don't mind the way Google selects ads. I only get ads for bikes and bike parts, which I find much more interesting than ads for political parties or "the kind of medication that helps you perform better in bed"
If you really don't want those, you can always enhance your privacy settings in your browser's menu.
You can also clear cookies occasionally. Ccleaner has a nice feature that lets you select which cookies to keep. That way if you clear your cookies, you don't have to log in to every site you frequently visit.
Personally I use srware Iron, which is a trimmed-down version of Google Chrome. That browser works pretty fast and doesn't send too much personal information to Google.
