Gear cable routing - backward steps

You just need to use anti-rotation washers to suit this positioning.

There's always one.....

You can always rely on me, yessir!
It's hardly an unlikely situation - any bike that has top tube/seat stay gear cable routing would use this configuration, surely? So that's the majority of recent mountain bikes then.
And I would hazard a guess that in the British Isles there are far more mountain bikes with Alfine hubs running around than, say, commuters or "shopping" bikes.
I've never seen one on anything other than an mtb.

Is it just me

In my opinion its just you.

Now step away from the computer (and looking at new bikes) and go for a ride until the grumpiness goes ;)

All good points.

Funnily enough I did go for a ride after that :-)

...and yes I was having a grumpy moment. Just a bit sick of the endless coverage of full suspension bikes in the bike press at the moment and seeming lack of innovation (or coverage of such) in hardtails. I had high hopes of a hardtail pace and felt disappointed, but having read the comments here I can see what they were going for and I realise I was being too perfectionist about cable routing. My comments about rear mechs stand though. I think its stupid that they've lost the barrel adjuster, and no-one will convince me otherwise.
