Gary Fisher Mamba - Parts bin beater.

Hi all.

Thought I'd build up this little old Gary Fisher I recently acquired. It's not exotic, or in good nick, but I think it will be quite charming when complete.

Frame cost me £1 from ebay. It's steel. 18" ish. It'll do I hope.

Had to buy the back wheel (Sunn mountain something.....XT hub though!) off ebay for £10. Also paid for the forks.

The bottom bracket had been BUTCHERED by a previous owner. I had to resort to hacksawing and chiselling to get it out, so was really chuffed when I managed to wind the replacement BB in (with the help from my hammer  )

The rest is all parts bin and it's all pretty cheap stuff. Heavy but sturdy enough.

I might well swap it to single speed at some point but for now the gears can stay.

Not complete yet. I've found some headset cups, some pedals and should have brakes knocking about. Might have to SHELL OUT and buy a seatpost for it.

The tyres will stay for now but eventually I want something skinnier and 'knobblier' for mixed use.

I don't have any need for this bike but it's actually cleared room in the garage by using some of my spares so I'm happy.

Re:

Nice!

I bought one of these a couple of years ago. My re-introduction to mtb riding.

They're really good to ride, not heavy at all, for a budget framed bike! 8)

In the process of upgrading mine now!

Looking forward to progress

Re:

Thanks Mike!

I did think it was quite light considering. When I bought it off ebay I got a specialized rockhopper frame "thrown in" for an extra £1   but this 'fisher frame seemed much more appealing in terms of geometry.

Will update when possible.

Parts bin builds are usually the most satisfying
Get on with it then

Ahhhh , the rockhopper , Christ they just keep cropping up don't they
And to think you paid a pound for it , rip off

Re:

I bult up a Rockhopper recently. Wasn't a patch on the Mamba though, so it's been split and sold now.

Picked the Fisher up from re-finishers yesterday! 8)

SFFS , whys my iplod putting an S in first

Anyway , fisher frames , later ones , over looked , why ? Discuss
Got a nice AL1 , sturdy F off alloy thing , really nice but not got the cannondale GT appeal , why ?

Re:

Thankfully these '97 models use conventional bbs. I 've no knowledge of the press fit and circlip jobs, but I've heard they can be a right pita.

Garf, and ebay purchase, after I stripped him down and re-built to something that worked

Before deciding to rat him

Now about to start his third life!

I'd love to find a Procaliber, gold and red 8) Seen a few alloy Fishers for sale, have two myself, look great but they don't do my back any favours Mikee :(

Enough of the Sipod!
