Thought someone might know about my 1992 bottom bracket from my Gary Fisher. It needs to be replaced but seems to be a strange type- not threaded almost seems to have been pressed into the frame. Any suggestions on what I can use as a replacement? Will get in touch with Fisher cycles on monday but don't know if they will have stock?

Cheers

Gary

It's a press in BB. Can't recall if it has a lockring on the outsides, you can simply look and tell.

I've had the bearings replaced at a LBS in the past on my vintage Gary Fishers. Just do your best to not get water on that area.

It has a ring with two holes and is not a full ring if that makes sense??? Once these are out you peel back the rubber protective ring and you can lub up, problem I have is there seems no way to remove the bearings. There is alot of play in the cranks so think the BB is done. May well see if my LBS will put in threads to give me more options, I take it this should be no problem?

Alright, so the BB bearings are held in place with lockrings (and maybe locktite between the bearing race & BB shell but can't recall).

From what I remember seeing the bike mechanic do, is once the locksrings are out, he gets a piece of wood and places it on the BB spindle and taps it with a rubber mallet. This takes out the bearing on the opposite side he's tapping on. Then he does the same on the other side. Then presses in new bearings. I think the factory bearings aren't that good. Whatever brand the mechanic used afterwards lasted 7 years.

Don't have that particular bike anymore or else I'd take a look at the brand.

It's a fairly straight forward procedure. Hope this helps.
