Hi the fleet is having a change round leaving me wanting a full sus modernish bike, Inspired by my mave's 300 quid cannondale something or other. Basically can't afford to spend too much but hoping to find something from around the turn of the century that is capable as a cross country bike. I'm tempted by the specialized fsr as i.ve heard lots of good stuff about them but i'm really put off by their almost bso looks(dives for cover) i'm not bothered about frame material, don't want huge travel, would be good if the rear shocks are adjustable for weight as i'm a lump. Don't care if disk or v. The only thing is i don't want to spend more than 500. Any suggestions. Ps this isn't a wanted thread- i don't have any cash at the moment, its a fact finding mission. Cheers, dave

What you really mean is your bored and your imagination is running wild

I found Trek Y frames to be good for XC use. The last year they made decent ones was '99 though.

Have a look at Giant NRS frames and bikes, first production about 1999/2000 and considered at the time to be pretty innovative and good (i.e. they worked well). 3.5 inches of travel at the rear and will happily cope with a 100mm fork at the front although originally came with 80mm I think. Also very light for their time. My frame weighed 5.5lbs which is pretty damn light even by todays standards.

I had a 2005, last of the line version, and I wish I'd kept it...it's perfect for XC use.

You could also consider an early Trance from about 2005 as they go for around the same price but weigh a ton, 7lbs for an 05.

I have been watching NRS's on ebay recently (want to singlespeed one) and frames go for about £150 and full bikes from £300 to £500.

Thanks for suggestions thus far. I'd like to keep away from y frames really, just don't like the look. I'm a ponce i know!. Never thought of giant- worth thinking about. And perry, you are probably spot on! I was a little fearful of the rigid brigade's input when i posted this!

That's the sort of linkage you want! Some sort of Horst linkage or similar. Forget URTs, single pivots or virtual pivot points. It's a similar set-up to my Salsa from 2004, an absolutely lovely ride, ans quite a bit lighter than a Santa Cruz Superlight.... :D http://www.flickr.com/photos/16732514@N ... 496170157/
I don' know how big you are, bu I know where you can get a NOS large frame for £300!

I see what you mean regarding the similarity, it's visual as well though, apart from the shock mount they both have that lean XC look and skinny rear end. Nice!

Yeah, I think they had really got their act together by then. I know their 90's stuff isn't really all that but from about 2000 onwards I think they started to produce some really good bikes.

Still not a fashionable choice but it's the ride that counts...and for that kind of money you could spray it up in a colour of your dreams
