FSA Gossamer chainset, grease or no grease?

Im fitting a new FSA road chainset with external b/b.

Trouble is, there is a layer of loctite visible around some of the thread on both bearing sections. also, the fitting instructions (yes, I gave up and read them) make no mention to applying grease anywhere.

So im thinking, do I need to apply any grear to the bearing cups and b/b shell threads, or do I go against everything thats ingrained into me and leave them dry?.....

Surely it could seize in place, not to mention creak?

The only reference I can Google, is an unofficial fitting guide showing a very similar chainset being used, and applying liberal swathes of grease. Although, the loctite layer is still present on the threads!

hi i'm an ex mechanic and have said c set on my road bike............its all down to how good you BB threads are to begin with..........it you know / or it becomes apparent that its gonna be very tight n stiff, clean out the BB threads 1st then apply a smear of grease with your fingers to inside of BB, as the cups go in it will make entry easier !!

Use anti sieze. Grease is designed to make things move/slip/turn, not the properties you want on a fastner!

oh i see......

well i kinda fitted it last night regardless, and applied a smear of grease to all threads....
I figured that the b/b sheel would eventually corrode with the b/b threads if left bare?

I could always remove the lot tonight and get as much of the grease of as possible?
Its a new frame and new b/b so condition should all be spot on.

whaddya think? suck it and see? or remove and clean?

oh, Kaiser, when you say anti seize...does loctite count?

nah it'll be fine people have been doing it for years. But in future I'd recommend the appropriate stuff. Its still better to do what you've done than have nothing at all I reckon

hah hah...a smear of grease will act just like an anti seize.......and stop corrosion through water getting in the BB shell..............there's lots of products out there and yes there are times when you 'must' use the appropriate thing......but a BB cup will come out better in the future if the threads are cleaned and a 'smear' of grease or anti seize is used.....i personally would not choose to use locktite unless the BB was a loose fit in the 1st place...........some are tight others are not , depends on how they have been made....(tolerences blah blah )
