Front mechs are the worst idea in the world.

Importantly, how did this Millar chappy get the chain back on by the way - did he use the old foot trick (which scores maximum style points), or did he dismount and resort to a twig or go the full hog and use is bare fingers (which is messy and a little embarrassing) or did he end up with the chain around the pedal and a really scratched crank (which can be rather heartbreaking if NOS gear)?

Happy New Year fellas, and carry on!

Blimey. He must be a fairly supple fella than. I usually try to get my cycling buddy to assume domestique roles but he always complains; do you think I should sack him?

You should probably let everyone who does that know then.

As it is, the world is full of singles that aren't 1/8th wide. What do you think they put on 5 speed bikes?

Did I ever at any time mention 5 speed freewheels?? & come to think of it nor did you, IIRC your original post that started this thread was referring to a 6 speed freewheel.

Pictured: the only man pedantic enough to care about the relative chance of chains coming off with a 5 vs 6 speed freewheel.

Bitd if the chain dropped between the crank arm and the arms that was it :) jammed until you could find a screwdriver!

OK just found this on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Millar
His attempt to win the prologue in central Paris in the centenary Tour of 2003 ended when his chain dropped off 500 m before the finish. He lost by 0.14 s to Brad McGee. Millar had ridden a bike without a front derailleur.[n 2] He blamed his directeur sportif, Alain Bondue. "It wasn't a problem with my chainring; it was a problem with my team," he told journalists at the finish. He said Bondue had tried to save a few grams by removing the derailleur. Bondue said he had told Millar to use a front derailleur after other riders had similar problems.[17][18] Bondue was demoted to logistics manager.[18]
like I said "Sacked" as director sport!!
AND not the mechanic as I first said, my humble apologies to the mechanic.

And this also might be an interesting read for some people thinking of doing the same thing!! http://fernandoj.wordpress.com/2013/08/ ... erailleur/

Marvelous invention that little stud on the outer ring just where the crank arm is. I have before now though drilled it out to save a few vital grams and be able to flip the ring to get more life out of it.

Maybe Bondue was a fan of clean sport , Millar DEFINATELY IS ! . . . Now  . but don't get me started !
