I just got this mech for my Stumpy(firs of it's kind that i've ever used), and seems that it pretty much pushes striaght out which leads me to my question: Where should the chain sit in the cage when on the granny ring.

ATM it sits like this(granny & middle of cassette):

Which looking at the next photo leads me to believe it's too high...

On the middle ring(and middle of cassette):

Now, where will it sit when it's on the 42t!?

It seems like it should be sitting lower, like right in front of the fluted section on the cage when on the 22t....right??

Help

my initial reaction is that it should sit so there is about 2 mm clearance between the cage and the teeth .... but my next reaction is that maybe not as you may have it set up for a 3 ring chainset but without the 3 ring .... whcih is unusual and since I have never tried it like that, dunno if it is ok ... but I suspect not going b y photpos of mechs I have seen,

you can get shimano mechs where the clamp sits above the cage wcih would be better for you as you will be able to mount it lower - presumably the tube becomes less round so you cannot mount the mech you have on now lower.

phew so many words ..... :?

it needs to go lower i reckon, even if the big ring was there it would be too high, you should be able to set it up as if the middle ring was the big ring, so a few mil above the teeth of the largest ring when without cable tension, and then set the limiter screws to stop the full travel of the cage

If you are running 2 x 10, or 2 x 9, then you should have a compatible front (and rear) mech.

I recently set up an Orange C16R with a 2 x 10 set up for my daughter, and set the height of the front mech as I would for any other bike, that is (as has been said) around 1 to 3 mm above the outer chain ring.

Thats probably not a million miles out but maybe could go a little lower.

Put a large ring on and set it up properly!

Aye Aye aye...I will be running 3 rings as soon as I find a compact 42t cheaper than the GNP of Bolivia.

What I ask is if the chain should 'ride' lower in the cage when it's sitting on the granny ring. Because when it's on the Middle ring, it looks like the chain will have no more room once shifted onto the(at his moment non-existent) big ring.

See what I mean???

EDIT:

Just read this:

...that is (as has been said) around 1 to 3 mm above the outer chain ring.

Ok...i'lll wait to make the final height adjustment until I find a 42t.

Thanks ladies....

Chain sitting on the 32, top ring is a 44, hope that helps?
PS as been said, that's a triple mech really, so best advice to change mech or fit a top ring.

As others have said, ~2mm above the big ring (when fitted). If you're only using two small rings a triple mech has to stay in pretty much the same position otherwise the cage hits the chainstay.
