From chainring to bash ring

I need to convert the big ring on the Voodoo into a bash ring..

I have some cutting wheels for the Dremel and some sanding wheels too..

Is it a fairly low-risk (in terms of effing it up) venture?

Simply a case of cutting off the pointy bits and sanding of any remaining lumpage?

New middle ring en-route and that's just about all that's left to be done (other than headset, chain and bottom bracket) and it's finished...

It'll be quicker (and cheaper) using a file than faffing around with a Dremel.
Or even better, buy one from here.

Cheap as chips and well made too.
In my opinion converted chainrings always look crap as bashrings as they're far bigger than you need.

If it's five arm/94mm BCD 32T you're after, I've got a BBG one you can have for a tenner posted.

The chainring is a Bontrager one and matches the crank arms.. and it's the Wifes bike and she likes the little paw prints on it . .

the new ring is a 36t and black so a little bigger (that silver middle one is a 32T)

If you have a mate who has access to a lathe, then the easiest thing would be to chuck it in a 4-jaw and get rid of the teeth that way - if you only want it for chain retention (and not for chainring protection) you could afford to lose quite a bit on the OD and take it down to the outer shifting pin holes for example.

You could do it by hand too, of course, it'll just take longer and won't be as easy to get a good finish - a pity that you're not just down the road, I'd gladly do it for you.

Sadly no lathe-owning buddies near me.. wouldn't even know where to start looking for local engineers either..

It is only to help with chain retention and aesthetic appeal, it'll never have a hard life even if I take it out for a spin.

A pity indeed buddy. . . could do with someone to chip out for a spin with ;)

There must be a fair few retrobikers within reach of you?

Unlike me, where I'm sure that no-one else who posts on this forum lives.
A lot better riding here than Essex though - I wouldn't trade places with you

There probably is.. I haven't looked, to be fair

I've seen some of your scenery fella. . . swapping for Essex would result in being locked up in a loony bin

Well.. now I know I'm on the right lines with the chainring, I'll just have to take my time and do me best ;)

i did it quite easily the other day
i say easy, it took me a few hours as i was using a drill rubber disc thing which the sandpaper screws onto, it kept chewing up the sandpaper but i got there in the end
turnt out pretty good then got replaced a few days later
if your using this method be carefull to not catch the black paint
let me know if you need any more advice

If you fancy a trip to jct 14 of the M25, I can do this for you in about half an hour. Here's my 42T Truvativ ring that's now a bashguard:-
