Been thinking of putting together something French.
Light but high quality and pretty sleek. Probably rigid but would consider suspension.

Had Original Sachs Quarz mechs and hubs in mind with Mavic parts such as headset and bottom bracket Probably Sachs shifters too.
Specialities TA rings and if any Mtb cranks are available from them.

Any other or alternative (high end pre 98) parts in mind? Forks? Stem and bars and post? Brakes?

And of course, most important thing is the Frame - Sunn comes to mind. There's a nice Sunn Vertik frame on sale on eBsy - how are these like? Or any alternatives? Where were they made? Or any other French made mid 90 Mtb around worth considering?

Thanks guys some ideas pls

Sunn is a very good choice for a French high-end frame. They also made their own suspension forks called Obsys (there was even a carbon version, kinda Pace like). The only other maker that comes to my mind would be Look. They were heavier involved in Roadbikes but had some MTBs too, hey also had the awesome Look Fournales linkage fork (got two of those). As far as components go, Sunn had a range of their own stems, handlebars, seat-posts and wheels (the hubs were made by DT). mavic is always a good choice. Depending on what vintage you want to go after, if you want some 2000ish French exotica I would say Hurrycat Vorace fork and EGS upcage dérailleur system (look those up, however we're talking rare as hen's teeth and super expensive). Hope this helps, I do like your build idea.

Re:

Thanks for the pointers and the info on the forks and frames!
Very interesting!
I was looking at basing it around a set up dating from say 91 to 97 or so.

Are Sunn frames made in France? (Ie the welding) or japan? or elsewhere? and Look?

There's a Sunn Exact (built by Morati, Ti-frame) with a Look Fournales fork on leboncoin.fr (danson outet this in the e-bay marketplace watch forum).
Very nice! About as nice as you can get for a good base for a french build. At 1300 euro the price isn't bad imo. (for what you get).

Too much for me - was looking for a frame only and then a build - over a period of time, rather than complete bike . Will check links out when home later.

Got to admit , they are very nice!

Any Sunn riders here ? (Or Look)

If you can't find (or stretch to) Look Fournales, or Hurrycat linkage weirdness...which both go for around £350-£400 for a NOS set these days  ...how about DF racing:

There are various versions, elastomer, air oil, long travel etc. pretty cheap for some fancy French CNC work, £100?

All the best,

Had a look at that, stunningly beautiful frame - Fugly forks which I think spoil it. Beautiful bike love the CNC work and the welds. This from 2000 I think? Read the translated page.

Way over budget for me in one swoop.

Was looking to get a frame only for now, then add the parts I had in mind.
I wonder how much this frame only would be?
