Just after some advice. Finally getting round to having the Explosif frame renovated to restore it to it's former glory (as per brochure pic) and wanted to know peoples experiences of either Argos or Bob Jacksons. I am having the frame, forks, stem and bars repainted and then getting them to apply the decals and clear coat. Bob Jacksons are a little cheaper on price but I want a really good job as this will be a concours restoration.

Cheers, Mousemat.

I would have said Bob. There was a frame that came to the shop to be built that had been resprayed by Argos, none of the threads had been masked off and there was a 'pool' of paint around the BB shell where it had been stood up to dry. Could have been a one off though.

On the flip I've seen plenty of frames done by argos that've been spot on. No experience of Bob Jackson but heard he good also.

I'm going though a bit of a dodgy transaction with Argos at the mo- respray was ok, but the decals have been a real let down (they applied more modern style stickers in a different color to what I had specified). I'm in the process of giving them the option of doing the job right or not at all (eg no payment from me)...

I put this down to doing it through a LBS rather than eyeballing them from the gogo.

If you've got your own decals then they are still a good company imho.

i have seen a perfect repro of this exact paint by argos and it was the nuts. but yes they are more expensive than bob. i'm waiting for a frame back from bob at the mo, i used bob because they seem to have a wider colour choice overall and do brighter more vivid colours because they wet paint not powder coat like argos. but i have to say every frame i have ever sent to argos i have been very pleased with the result.

Best bunch of blokes down at Argos. Gary lets me photograph him work on my bikes too...

Had nothing but pissyness and lousy communication with Bob Jackson cycles.

It will never be better than doing it yourself. Plus you get a better bond with your machine knowing its all your own work. Don't worry about tackling it- my old man told me when I was 14 'If you can piss you can paint'! just go for it-if it doesn't work out start again  Save yourself a few bob too!

Ive seen more by Bob Jackson than Argos, and when I was looking at restoring my 93 explosif (before i scrapped the project) I had intended going for Bobs offer.

A main concideration for me was that Bob Jacksons is mere miles from my leeds place so could happilly drop off and pickup saving any risk of postal damage to a freshly finished frame.
