I actually quite like rummaging through readers rides and seeing a childhood dream next to something dragged out of a skip next to a piece of californian exotica next to a bike with risers and bar does. I like the sense of community that offers

Good for you. Personally I don't.

My name is Kevin and I'm a bike snob :P

I don't recall that always being the case.. ;-) What changed??! You been hanging around with the older boys again...?!

Mr K

All your bikes are belong to us. The good ones at least.

We all had start somewhere. I'm first to admit that some of my early builds were shockers but fortunately I learnt from my mistakes.

Fortunately my taste has improved with age

Isn't that the whole point - endeavours like these public forums and their inherent spirit of collective (pooling knowledge, resources and grand failures) were and are instrumental in the 'improvement' you now speak of.

Sadly it seems to divide people eventually - once they are 'improved' they either stick with it and enjoy putting something back (helping others 'improve', organising events etc.) or disappear, often in a self justfying melodrama, having the gall to look back witheringly, like sniggering schoolboys at others beginning their journey through those very same foothills...

The way I see it is simple - one is either of a generous or giving persuasion or one is mean spirited and competitive to the point that they would supress their fellows. If everyone were to act in this manner there would have been no 'improvement' for anyone - period. If we take - we should be able to give - simples.

I also note the italiscised 'I' and take the inference to mean that there are others here who have yet to, or may be unable to attain the enlightenment you speak of - care to give some examples?? Or even better, some methods of 'correction' so that others may save themselves from the mistakes you may have made...! ;-)

Mr K

PS. I trust the riding has 'improved' under your new tutelage too... ;-)

No it's not - it's simply my 'philosophy' if you will, based on my observations of being on a niche forum like this. I pretty much started when Kev did, so his comments and actions are of interest in understanding how this relatively new phenomenon ('a public forum') is evolving nationally and globally. The fact that he has publicly declared himself as 'improved' is just plain funny to me as I've read it as tongue in cheek...

It's a useful debate starter though - the sense of 'common ownership' is very loosely defined, if at all. These shifting sands or interpretations are what lead us to such varied opinions and actions further down the line.

One can understand the bunker mentality, of course, but it's a cheap shot to get one over on the 'masses' and ultimately, not self sustaining (hence the plethora of foreign IP traffic and content/photo lifting from here... ;-) )

I simply dont have the budget to go big & anal (jokes on a postcard) on builds so I just thrash around with what 'literally' falls into my lap.

I never raced so never got into that scene.

I found mountain bikes an excellent way of escaping a childhood I wouldnt wish on my worst enemy and it galls me to see snide comments and elitism creeping in from people who (in my opinion) should know better.

My thrashing around with kack has unearthed some excellent bikes and bodging skills and a knowledge base that is ever expanding.

But, if I ever see another 200GS chainset.....
