For the "everything Halfords sells is crap" brigad

Not really as some stuff from ebay is ok as well
It is just that their aggressive marketing techniques get on my nerves and their general lack of knowledge on "their subject" and the fact that most of the staff ime are pig ignorant, the actual products are ok just the above.I would rather give my money to some small business than to them  Mind you I do not use supermarkets if I can help it either....(sometimes M+S  )

Parents buy bike for sprog - bike is ok for a while, light use, bearings fall out of freewheel going down a curb.

Bike in warranty, taken back to Halfrauds, staff say its not an MTB and shouldnt be taken off road...

I point to picture of said bike (with SPDs) on the wall flying through the air - off road.

Bike repaired.

Does the place of purchase REALLY make something good or bad??
It depends, a lot of shops sell a lot of tat, but sometimes have hidden gems.

Sports shops that sell bikes (JJB etc) are full of tat that I wouldn't touch with the shitty end of a big stick (catalogue bikes also fall into this category)

Halfords, 99% crap, 1% good, the amount of Apollo BSO's sold is beyond belief. However they do have Boardman, Carrera & Voodoo. But they have lost GT (says something doesn't it)

LBS, most have a range from slightly better than Halfords tat up to 'how fricking much, you could buy a car for that' bikes

A lot can be said for good service too, you could buy a good bike from a bad bike shop, which might put you off that brand of bike as well as the bike shop.

Does rescuing stuff from skips count as a purchase? I mean the amount & quality of stuff that our resident Skip Monkey finds would throw the whole thing on it's head

What prompted the question was..

When I originally posted pics up of the Voodoo, an are those the ones that Halfords sell comment arose, possibly unintentionally but it came across as quite derisory..

Then the other day (in the funky tyres thread)..

i was planning on getting a set of these about a year ago, i couldnt afford them but at least then they werent in halfords

Kinda hinting that they were ok before Halfords sold them but afterwards they've somehow become a much poorer product.

So I wondered about how the people who deride Halfords universally felt about all the products they sell (let's restrict it to MTB's and parts/accessories)..

They're like any box shifter... You're better knowing exactly what you want before you go in there..

Like buying a PC from PC World, because it's sold in there it isn't any worse than the one from Honest Bob's PC Emporium down the road.

The one major variable seems to be staff knowledge, you have some who know their stuff and some who know nothing. I would defend myself from this by knowing what I'm looking for myself.

I spent a little while drooling at their GT ID-5 I-Drive XCR yesterday. Didn't have a spare grand in my pocket, sadly.

It's the shop for people who don't know, don't want to know or can't be bothered to know any better!

Yes, they do sell some half decent stuff in there, but they sell a lot of god awful crap too!!! They are a convenience to people who just want to buy a bike as opposed to someone wanting to go to their LBS and find out what's best. Do you go to your local butcher for meat or Tescos/Sainsbury's/Asda etc..?

I'm sure Tescos/Sainsbury's/Asda etc. meat get's talked about in a similarly derided fashion on www.retromeat.co.uk , it's the difference between an enthusiasts shop and a mass market money grabbing superstore

Is that an exhaustive list of people who buy from Bikehut?

That's not my experience of my LBS.. and I would guess that there are as many, if not more, crap LBS's than Halfords stores in the UK.

Tesco or Morrisons

my mrs bought our little girl a bike for Christmas last year it was a Raleigh girly princess type thing, came with stabilsers a doll carrier and a basket on the front, got it from argos for £69.00, It was the cheapest nastiest piece of shite ever! solid tyres, pressed steel front caliper brake, and worst of all the handlebars had been welded to the stem twisted. A couple of weeks later and just before Christmas i was in halfords and looked at one of there girly bikes, £10 more than she'd spent would of got her the equivalent bike but it had proper tyres and front and rear V brakes. Wished i'd of seen the crappy raleigh before she got it as we're having to replace it this year. So it looks like i'll be checking out halfords again.
