I have friend who has a Naim CD player - year 2000 approx.
And have been informed by a couple of 'experts' that it will cost to much to get repaired.
The player is the Naim CDS Version 1 with the two box CD player NACDS Plus power supply.
The problem is the CD tray just wont play discs any more with lots of bad noise coming from it. They have been told that Naim don't make parts for it any more. The parts had been replaced 4 yr ago.

Any advice? Any places that he could contact?
Thanks

Depends what is broken. Look up a hifi forum, one of those ones that likes modifying stuff, and search on there.

I would bet it is a failure mode that has occurred before, and is possibly common. Then you can have a guess at what parts need replacing, and how common/scarce those parts are.

Most parts will be generic, perhaps one or two chips are custom or programmed by Naim.

By bad noise, do you mean from the speakers or from the tray mechanism? There is probably a self test routine you can put the machine trough if you find the technical manual. I had a Arcam Alpha 5 CD player that stopped working, all that was needed was a little twist to the motor assembly.

The problem with old CD players/ transports is that, like certain retro bits, parts are simply no longer manufactured.

You may try this guy who is a clever chap:

If the laser mechanism has failed that might be replaceable with other types of mech. If the DAC has given up, other chipsets can be used.

Thanks chaps. The noise was from tray area :?
Will tell my boss tomorrow

just the tray area?

and - does it actually play anything?

No sound of sweet music. yes seems to be the tray area only

Plenty of talented bodgers there, ready and waiting with soldering irons pre-heated and prone.
 Talented bodgers are usually called upon to fix broken toasters -- I wouldn't really let them anywhere near a Naim CD player and dedicated power supply...

Tintin40, get your friend to post a good description of what's happening on here: http://forums.naim-audio.com/eve/forums
Hopefully, he'll get a list of options from some pretty well-informed people.

When you say the noise is from the tray area, and it doesn't play anything, it sounds to me the gears are jammed or teeth have been stripped from the loading/lifting mechanism. It could well just be a mechanical fault and not electrical.
