Folders! Foldable bicycles, minivelos and demontables

My colleague jo brought his mini velo mtb gravel hipster mount over the quantocks with us, rhs:

Sadly his derailleur chucked the chain behind the cassette...

fortunately he was in the presence of 4 other long serving bike mechanics so we got to have several arguments about what had gone wrong and how best to fix it with no more than a tyre lever and credit card, sticks and stones.

Popular points were:
that the wheels were too small,
a true mechanic can never be bothered to set his own bike up properly
and the rider had bent it doing tricks like a muppet.

It didn't come to fisticuffs, as the pub was only a few minutes ride down the valley.
Immersion in lager appeared to fix the issue.

ah yes, the age old issue of 1 guy digging a hole and 3 telling him how to do it.

But ohhhh the pisstake and banter opportunities it made 🤣 🤣

Before my kid was born we used to travel a lot more as a couple.. (he was conceived in Ipenemma 🥰 )

When he was born we became a single income household and living in the middle of nowhere, there was no local kids for him to play with, so to aid his social development we took him to nursery at Kelham Island nr my work, alas non of these kids lived near us either.. 😁

These days, albeit very expensive (with a mortgage and nursery fees on a single income) were incredible, we couldn't afford to go on holiday but my flexible work life meant that given 3 or 4 days of fine weather, not yet constrained by the school timetable, i could take him father and son wild or farm camping around the Peak District.. (which we did 10-12 times/yr) i would bungee off the sleeves of my down jacket for his sleeping bag ..he bagged every peak in the district before he was 5yrs old, with the occasional donkey ride for good measure. 😁

Once he started school and the private nursey fees stopped, Sarah returned to work part time so we started to go on holiday again, albeit.. insanely expensive out of term time.. my Mrs had numerous brain surgeries so we became a single income household again.. her days of hiking up volcanos or climbing down cliffs to secluded beaches are pretty much over.. but that doesn't mean they're over for the boy and I.. anywho, he's 16 this year so this might be one of the last family holidays we have together, he'll probably be off with his mates next year.. so with the prospect of losing my adventure buddy, i've got to consider what my future holidays are going to look like.. which brings me neatly back to this thread

I'm considering a packable mini-velo like this..

It uses the Ritchey Breakaway System so it packs down into a small suitcase

..i can get a cheap flight to Europe for a couple of hundred quid when the kids are at school, pick up my suitcase, get a taxi to a small rural shack somewhere in the mountains, spend the next day assembling the bike.. use it for the week, disassemble, taxi back to the airport and home.

They're not cheap but i've just paid £2600 for our flights this year 😲 those same flights in term time would be £700 the difference in one year pays for the bike.. also my daily commuter needs lots of £££s spending on it, i'm considering replacing my commuter (it's only a 20min commute) with this^ therefore justifying the cost a little more..

What do y'all think?

That's the ultimate case usage for these bikes.

Looks good.

A lot of long time riders find 1x lacks top end, but if you don't mind that, it offers many advantages.

Should have discs though - why not?
