Hi,
i have just purchased a new vintage race bike with a flip flop hub one side is fixed and the other side has 5 cogs does anyone know what these are called? and if they are any good?

Thanks

Re:

Any good depends on the make. Like all hubs there are good ones and not so good ones.As far as the fixed free set up goes it is excellent as long as you realise you will only be able to use screw on freewheels with it.Slightly more weight and eight speed max and then only with a longer spindle resulting in either stretching or cold setting to the rear dropouts. Also longer spindles can result in spindle failure. If you dont need to increase your gears and the hub is well sealed and smooth then excellent.Ride it free in summer and fixed in winter. Fixed gives you a better workout over the shorter winter rides and keeps the legs warm. You will be much better for it when you go back onto gears in summer

Often these are the same as standard Flip-flop wheels. The freewheel hub is threaded onto the hub in the same way your 5 speed is.

I have a flip-flop on my sun as these are the only wheel I could find to fit. I took the single speed of and put a three speed on.
