I don't want to encourage nabeaquam to try and remove the collet but oh boy what could be seen if it was out 🤩 how the stays are done phwoar it'll show it's magnifence.
 
Basically the little tube that sticks out the seat tube must have slits in it ....and be either threaded externally or the nut threads to the seat tube... I think 🤔

OK, so that little bit sticking out of the seat cluster is a bit like that "collet" thingy in the middle of your picture?

I can visualise it a bit more now. And what we don't know is how it all tightens up to grip the tube, and conversely how to release it too?

Now I get it. Oh duh. A bit like a plumbing compression fitting then. Similar principals going on at least.
 
We've not seen a photo with the seat post and nut yet. God it looks incredibly elaborate.
