Fitting 'standard' shocks to an STS

Re:

I don't ride the donkey often, I've had the same brake pads on it since I last rebuilt it in 2007.

Found loads of useful links over the years for bits and pieces but only recently started looking through here and other forums. It's great to see these old gals are still pretty popular.

Looking through makes me want to strip her naked and get intimate with a tube of autosol. Ball burnished and I've never polished it since I got it in 2000, dirty old hag.

Re:

The STS linkage is a bit of aluminium at the end of the day. I'm sure someone could mill a replica with proper eyelets. Could be expensive, could be cheap. I've no idea but it has crossed my mind.

I'm wondering if it's a feasible/sensible idea to have a rocker made for my RTS that has a built in mount for a standard, or perhaps even a risse amp shock?

Re:

Feasible? Yes, anything is feasible with cash and time to throw at it, look at the moon landings or concorde or the Scottish parliament building.

Sensible? When has riding 20 year old recycled coke cans down hills ever been sensible?

I did see somewhere a guy who made a new lever for the lts out of plain bar stock and some nuts and bolts, lots of adjustment built in but proper fugly.

If you have access to a machine shop then it's just time and materials otherwise just ride until the frame snaps and move on.

Not the sts though, they belong on the wall. :-)

Finally feel confident saying my lts is an LTS 1 from late 97 with a straight seat tube and the trunnion top link, need to get some pics up and a more detailed spec sheet.

Why did GT go bespoke on their full Sussers? I would really like an air shock on my RTS but risse prices aren't a realistic option for me.
this I have given a lot of thought lately and with a proper (custom made) adaptor I think it can be possible
there's 165mm space inside the frame, so a "normal" rear shock COULD work.
and you don't necessarily have to go through the frame, you can also go around it with a yoke like the newer spesh bikes are using

Re:

There's an adapter available or knock one up. Shock size choice from 5.5 to 7.5 eye2eye. Only works if your top pivot is behind the seatpost. No go on my LTS 1.

Re:

That's the ugly adapter I mentioned before. Not pretty at all and ruins the look of the STS imho.

Re:

I thought about getting a specialized shock and having a shaft made to fit the RTS, but the shock stroke rules that out.

I'm not sure it's feasible to go around the seat tube, I'm sure an option will present itself one day. Or I may be able to afford a risse........

the stroke can be modified according to your wishes, just a matter of spacers inside the shock
