I found a pic of my old LTS from 2009 with a 'standard' Fox in there - Should I be able to do the same thing with my STS? It would be nice and open up a few more options regarding making the back end more suitable for my fat arse.

Re:

I wish there was an alternative for my RTS as well.

Here's what I know about STS options.

1. Get a fox air shock from a cannondale Jekyll and modify the trunnion (trim) and modify/find some alternative bolts that will slot into the travel chips (maybe even mod the travel chips). This will get you an air shock, though options are limited.

2. There was an ugly mod I saw that bolted into the travel chips slot that creates a set of mounts to allow normal shocks to fit. It was ugly, expensive and could have been executed better imho.

3. Risse.

4. Create your own.

5. Have a new top linkage made to include a mount.

That's all I have I'm afraid.

Why did GT go bespoke on their full Sussers? I would really like an air shock on my RTS but risse prices aren't a realistic option for me.

Re:

Sorry, forgot to mention you could fit a coil shock as the threaded part is the same, trunnion or not. At least I think it is. You might need to thread it from the bottom after removing rebound adjuster and coil spring gubbins.

Re:

I love my lts, got a brand new RS superdeluxe when icycles had them about 10 years ago. Wasn't the 97 hard anodized finish but a silver 99 sts one. Rebound now clicks but it still does naff all, treacle or pogo! It's only done about 3 hours cycleway riding since so should be good for a while to come.

The full moon cycles travel chip mounted conversion was pretty ugly but looked to do the trick at a reasonable price, website is still up but isn't advertising any in stock, pretty sure if pushed, he'd knock one out. He used to have an eBay advert that advised what frames it would work with and if I remember, it's only lts or sts with the top frame pivot mounted behind the seatpost. As my frame looks like no other I've found and that pivot is in front, it doesn't work for me with the shock top mount fouling the seat post.

The jekyll mod is another option, got to be the first gen jekyll as they went back to eye to eye mounts after. Trunnion needs machined out and re-threaded to suit the Fox shock though.

Otherwise, yeah if the body of any coiler shock is the same diameter or a little bigger thanj the RS, then it should go in providing you can get the trunnion onto the threads. Problems I see with that is getting a shock with that tiny wee 1.75" stroke and anything you get will be just as ooold in the tooth as the RS surely?

Really the best option would be creating your own adapter out of 3 bits of string and some double sided tape or getting one made up to suit. Getting into newer shock technology is the way to go and adapter plates would allow you to get it at the back.

Re:

There is a guy on here who services the rs shocks. I got a couple done and am happy with them as the rebound and compression works well off the bike. Never fitted then add I've got air shocks on both my STS.

I have a friend, Nat, who is a dab hand with a spanner and a soldering iron who sorted my old shock previously. Shock shat itself all over the rear wheel + v brakes = BAIL! Nat was able to figure out some new seals, dumped the nitrogen and filled it with 25w oil, was still working fine when I blew through the coil plate at the bottom on some narly steps.

Would love to be able to afford the adapter and a decent modern shock but I'm struggling to scrape together the cash for a set of xt brake cartridges instead of using the nearest hatchback to slow down.

Re:

Oh and must say, some gorgeous plastic fantastic sts you got there, always loved the sts with the aluminium lugs at the joints. Looks proper futuristic even 20 years later.

Re:

Cheers, but they are sat gathering dust, haven't ridden either properly since building.

You don't have to modify the original rs trunnion, you can shave a mm of each side of the Jekyll one, modify some frame v brake bosses (or find alternative bolts) and away you go. I had some bolts made for one STS. The other I managed to find an original lts/STS fox shock and trunnion mount so no modifications needed.

I have a spare manitou shock from a Jekyll as well as a couple of fox ones, so you rent limited to just fox or risse. I don't know of any other air shocks.

I did have another trunnion but it was for a shock with such a wide body, I could not find anything to fit it, air or coil.
