Fitting Magura Rim breaks

Thinking of getting some Magura Rim brakes for my RC200. Has any one had experience of fitting these? How easy is it?

Cheers

Dead easy to fit as far as i can remember, just bolt on in place of canti's or V-brakes, had a set on a GT Zaskar years ago, you can get neat little clips too for fitting the hose for the rear one to the standard cable guides.

HI: I have three bikes with them. If you can fit and set up cantis then you will be fine.

The key points to remember:

1. Don't do everything up tight when fitting the braking units. Set it all up finger tight, then you will be able to wiggle the unit to the correct distance away from the rim. The set the toe-in and rotation and tighten it all up.

2. If you have to shorten hoses , tape the hoses to a piece of wood (like a bit of 2x1") then cut with a VERY sharp Stanley knife and refit the hose end. If you are careful then none of the fluid leaks out (beware, the hoses are quite springy) and you won't need to bleed them.

3. Bleeding is quite straightforward, the only thing I do is put a fitting on the end of the refill hose and screw it in to avoid a horrible mess

4. If you need extra fluid use Magura oil - car brake fluid is totally different and eats away the seals, completely trashing them in about 2 weeks.

After fitting you'll never have to touch them again. Replacement pads are a snap fit. My first Magura units have never needed any fiddling in 10 years.

Maguras are easy. Bleeding can be a mare. But great brakes with or with out a booster. 8)
Perfect for Trimble bikes :D

Cheers all,

Time to find me a set in red i think!!! :D

There was an 'anniversary' set in red fairly recently but allegedly they are easy to strip and paint.

I've had a 1st generation black pair since 1992 that came on my Saracen (now they are on my Pace) and they have never needed anything other than pads (grey ones are good), they piss all over any canti's or V's Ive ever seen but can be a tad be harsh on a frame (you will stop like Roadrunner  )

I hate riding with anything else to be honest....only downside is they collect mud quite fast due to their bulk.

I am in total agreement with this!

Love Maguras, Especially the years of hassle free usage you get out of them 8)

I love them, but the initial set up can be quite fiddly because they are SO adjustable!! I find when looking at the brakes in situ, fix the left hand one first (i.e. non-drive side on the rear set, drive side on the front set) get that set up and tightened, then the right hand one is a cinch.

Dot4 brake fluid

No, it's not DOT 4 brake fluid - that's like "normal" synthetic brake fluid.
Magura brakes all use mineral based fluid, which has the advantage of not being hygroscopic and it doesn't damage paintwork either.
Some Citroen cars used similar stuff and a few aircraft braking systems too.
