FITTING "JUDY FORKS" to Lava Dome

Wonder if anyone out there can help me.
Have just got a set of "Judy" XC forks(with 1 1/8" steerer tube) for my '96 Lava Dome and on speaking to the LBS they've told me that they won't fit as the necessary 1 1/8" threadless headset won't fit the head tube.
I don't know the internal diameter of the headtube or the external diameter of the necessary headset to confirm what the LBS is telling me to be true so wondered if anyone out there has a solution to the problem?
Many thanks if anyone can help,Mick.

hi, OE 96 Lava Dome's headset was a threaded 1 1/8" one. now you got a Judy XC also 1 1/8" but threadless. so your LBS should remove that OE spec headset and replace in with the headset of your choice but suiteable for 1 1/8" threadless forks. only limiting factor could be that the steerer of your fork is to short. did they explain you why it would not fit ?
Maybe you should contact another LBS ?

As mentioned the headset has nothing to do with it.
You just need a new one.
You'll also need a new stem.
...as long as the steerer is long enough (the tube on the forks that stick through the frame). It need to be ~70cm longer at least than the tube it is going through (normally)

Well they would certainly fit the frame

So I either typo'd an extra 0, or cm when it should be mm.
Take you pick :xmas-big-grin:

re fitting judy's

Cheers for that guys.Assume the term "LOAD OF BOLLOX"is a technical one lol.
Must admit he didn't try to sell me the latest full suspension down hill racer, probably the holes in my shorts and my general appearance convinced him he'd be wasting his time
