Re:
The modern XT chainset will not work with your current bottom bracket. You will need to get a modern bottom bracket if you want to go that way.
If I was in your shoes - I'd buy nothing until you have properly assessed what you already have. For one thing - getting a 24 year old bottom bracket out without destroying the frame *CAN* be a challenge in itself - before you even contemplate what will go in there afterwards.
Do this:
Buy nothing initially.
Get the cranks off.
Then give the bottom bracket axle a wobble in every direction. If there is play then it has to come out whatever happens.
If there is play then your next steps will be:
Get the BB out.
If the old one is sealed then scrap it and decide what to do. You can replace it with a newly manufactured square taper unit for about £15 (shimano UN55 in 122.5 axle width). Or you could get the new XT cranks, and a matching modern bottom bracket for about £150 total. If you go for the new stuff then google ACYCLES as they have the crank and BB cheaper than anywhere else. (I'm actually waiting for one of those chainsets from Acycles right now for my ritchey p29er - It was £131 inc the BB)
If it was me I'd put the UN55 BB in there and some new rings. Looks lots nicer and will work well
edit: forget ACYCLES - they're in France so I'd expect shipping to kill it if you're in Ohio.
