Patrick Moore once said that the problem with Television these days is that it is by and for Middle aged women.

yup

thats why i dont watch it

stuart marconie would be an amusing film critic i'd have thought tho

If only Ross didn't turn into such a twanker. His ability to " tell it like it was " ( at the cost of VAST Hollywood egos ) was legendary.
Several times I watched him ingratiatingly disappear up the bum of THE TALENT in a cozy fireside-like chat only to ( deservedly ) butcher their vanity project in review. Bliss.

Wossy as an interviewer had some legendary moments.. and he was a genuine fan of film. Got to be a bonus..

I like Claudia Winkleman but don't really see her as a film critic.. then again, I haven't watched Film XXXX since that old boy hosted it.

Do you mean on his chat show, or this one?

That seems entirely the problem, these days - medja intent on ensuring somebody popular is doing the work, rather than somebody who's actually good at it.

I'd agree.

What it doesn't need, though, is somebody determined to foist their wit on something purely for their own aggrandising.

Natural wit and turn of phrase that's funny, I can enjoy. Somebody who's just trying to be clever and funny, but actually to the detriment of the subject - bad choice IMO.

Thing is, though, on his chat show, it almost seemed like either chats with his "mates" or hopeless sycophant. Either that, or some daft, effected wierdness, that never rung true to me.

Presenting award shows, I can see him in his element.

Can't really comment on the Film thing - never watched it with him in.

But his chat show, just struck me as that, really - just "chat", no real depth to it.

I know Parkie was oddly deferential at times, but at least there was some substance to it.

It is the same with fishing shows....the biggest participator sport in england.....hosted a by a numpty geordie tosser with no skill whatsoever :x Gives people a bad name it does

what happened to matt hayes and bernard cribbins and john wilson etc etc etc.....

They put some muppet in front of a show because he is famous and not because he can fish :x

I thought he was pretty good on his chat show.. sometimes better than others. Randomly he seemed genuinely appreciative, wildly inappropriate and sometimes just plain annoying.. and seeing him struggle to bucking fuggery with Eminem was quite peachy too

Can't remember the show I saw 'Winkles' on but she was funny as feck... possibly Celebrity Juice..... could've been Buzzcocks...
