feeding the birds

We had a 'charm' of goldfinches on the feeder we put out for them. They really are lovely looking things. The doves and pigeons manage to eat most of the stuff that falls on the ground in our garden. The cats would see off any rats old as they are. The secret is to put the bird treats in a good clear area so that ambushes are impossible.

WOW.. seems theres a few of us doing the retro twitch :D :D

heres a few more pics of birds that feed here :)

Makes me wish I'd situated our feeder nearer to the house.

We get great tits, bluetits, robins, sparrows, blackbirds and, of course, about a million starlings.

Last year we had a greater spotted woodpecker as a regular visitor and until recently we've had a tawny owl as a regular in the huge tree behind the house, spotted him a couple of times too.

Spotted a goldfinch on the neighbours gate, but we haven't yet tempted him to our feeder.

we found it better to site the feeders close to the house as it was less likely birds would nest so close :). no wars over ownership of the food site then :) (nests and food sites close dont work and indeed cause the nesting birds to spend more time defending it than they do making babys)

this is what we have had actually feed from hanging and ground feeders :) (they don get listed unless they have taken from us lol..) would love to be able to add a woodpecker!! :)
