I think my favourite mis-understood fact relating to our western colonies is about the Boston Tea Party.
The colonials will insist that the issue that triggered the protest was the "No taxation without representation" thing. What they (and the present "tea party" movement) neglect to remember, or mention, is that the protesters who tipped the tea into the harbour were smugglers who were afraid that a proposed REDUCTION in the duty to import tea into the colonies would remove the market for their black market goods.
At about the same time, on George Washington was an officer in the British Army (and was in charge of the patrol that killed 10 members of a French patrol in what is now Pennsylvania, thus starting the 7 years war with France that culminated in the Wolfe's storming of Quebec).
