events in japan

The media people were reporting that the aftershocks were recorded as magnitude 7.

Japan's prepared for earthquakes. I dread to think how it would have turned out if they hadn't been.

Very true.

I'm sure it's cold comfort right now, but I have no doubt that so much good will come out of this - the amount of monitoring and data that will aid reasearch will be vital for future prediction.

Fukushima nuclear plant explosion... Not looking at all good

oh! how serious is it?
can they contain it?
are they containing it? any fallout etc.?

everyone is being a bit cagey about whats actually happened. there is video of a big explosion, but no one will confirm whats actually blown up.

so far it's only the outer part of the building that's gone boom, probably a Hydrogen/oxygen explosion.

The reactor vessel is still intact. Apparently.

Just been another 6 on the Richter scale quake in the Fukashima area according to BBC News 24

BBC news website is reporting a twitter feed saying it was a build-up of Hydrogen in the area outside the container which has apparently now been de-pressurised, time will tell I suppose but it's testament to the engineering that only that one reactor has had problems after such a major earthquake.

preparations for pressure release in all reactors at Fukashima plants 1 & 2

Plant 1 has been hit harder than plant 2. Unit 2 at plant 1 has a few issues but seems to be stable

Fukushima Daiichi
Unit 1
- 439 MWe BWR, 1971
- Automatically shut down
- Water level decreasing
- Pressure release implemented
- Explosion observed with unknown
effect
Unit 2
- 760 MWe BWR, 1974
- Automatically shut down
- Water level lower but steady
- Preparations for pressure release
Unit 3
- 760 MWe BWR, 1976
- Automatically shut down
- Preparations for pressure release
Unit 4
- 760 MWe BWR, 1978
- Shut for periodic inspection

Unit 5
- 760 MWe BWR, 1978

- Shut for periodic inspection
Unit 6
- 1067 MWe BWR, 1979
- Shut for periodic inspection

Fukushima Daini
Unit 1
- 1067 MWe BWR, 1982
- Automatically shut down
- Offsite power available
- Water level stable
- Preparations for pressure release
Unit 2
- 1067 MWe BWR, 1984
- Automatically shut down
- Offsite power available
- Water level stable
- Preparations for pressure release
Unit 3
