eBay's totally crushing my soul

I think what SantaHul was complaining about was that, although he was willing to go above the reserve, there were not sufficient competing bids (or at least not high enough) to push the auction above the reserve - Ebay does not increase your bid to meet the reserve unless somebody else bids against you to take the bids up to the reserve amount.

It does, you can keep bumping up your own bid until the reserve is met, only then can you not outbid yourself.

Santahul didn't meet the reserve, nor did any other bidder. The guy then listed it with a BIN less than that reserve and he missed out on the BIN.

Oops double post. I'll edit this one.

Sniping wouldn't have helped santa here unless his snipe was set higher than that original reserve anyway.

A snipe will only beat a manual bidder who puts in a low bid hoping for a bargain and sits watching the end of the auction ready to bid up anyone else, this is because it'll snipe very late, <10 seconds and you'd be lucky to get in there if your bargain bid gets outbid.

If you've gone in high anyway the sniper may still be below your price and would win anyway.

The sniper will only beat the manual bidder out for a bargain, if you put in what you're prepared to pay and the sniper does the same it's going to whoever values the item the most no matter what.

The thing with putting your maximum and walking away is, the nagging felling of sometimes 'just an extra £1 would of probably got me that' similar.

Trouble is you don't know this, the bid increment may only be a quid but the next highest bidder may have put in £100 more.

Thats true, and thats where i come in, sat at the pc in the last ten minutes. Bumping up 50p, £1 etc.

I hope that makes sense. It did whilst it was still in my brain, the question is, did it make it to the keyboard in a sensible fashion?

I might've stolen this for my sig if it wasn't so full...

So, am I getting this correct - if you bid £60 on an auction with a reserve of £50 (for example) you won't win it unless somebody else also bids over the reserve price (but under your's, obviously)?

If that's correct, then it's ridiculous, but surely it's not correct? :?

No that's totally wrong, you'll win it at £50.

You can ONLY outbid yourself below a reserve. Once you've hit the reserve you can only be outbid by another ebayer.

(Reserve is £50)
Bid 30 - not met reserve
Bid 40 - not met reserve
Bid £100 - reserve met, you're winning at £50

Next bidder, or sniper would have to bid >£100 for you to lose.
If they do bid you'll win by the bid increment up to the £100

They or a sniper bids £78 in the last 3 seconds, you'd win at £80.

Cheers Stew, somehow I'd missed your earlier post

That's exactly how I thought I understood it then, normal service can be resumed.

The only advantage of using a sniper, as I see it, is it doesn't give anyone a chance to get carried away or keep bidding in small increments because they're trying to beat you/flush out your top bid. Which you could do manually anyway, the sniper just saves you being there at the time.

Highest bid wins regardless, I think that's probably been mentioned already...

It did send me an offer to buy the bike, but when I went to the auction to accept it, it said the offer had expired :(

Bidding late via a snipe can also stop the dodgy sellers shill bidding too.
Anyway I snipe, but put in what I am prepare to pay for the item a few days before and leave it. Rarely do I increase (probably twice on hundreds of snipes) the bid. If I win great if I don't well someone else was prepared to pay more/had less sense :D
