Retro Newbie
Hi all, im looking for a Saracen from early to mid 90's. My cousin had one when we were around thirteen years old that was purchased second hand from Schmoo's in Swansea so I am unsure of the year of the bike.

He was told (or at least I was) that it was an ex team bike (Saracen or Schmoo's I dont know) I also dont recall seing a name/model on the bike, ok so no definate year and no model name! I know its a tall order, but if anyone will know it, it will be one of you guys!

Ok, so the bike was black and orange (I believe the rigid forks were orange) and it had Onza curved bar ends. I also remember the stem being long with saracen being stamped on a flat plate just above the headset. I cant remember the groupset, possibly dx but I know it was super smooth. The frame was cro-mo and conventional not like the elevated chainstay model. The brakes were lethal!

The reason I really want to find out/see this bike again is I have just got back into mountain biking after all of these years and expected the bikes to feel much better after all these years, how dissapointed was I with my Specialized enduro! Its heavier, not as smooth (gears and rolling) and just doesnt feel as composed as the Saracen all those years ago. Perhaps I just remember it better than it was? Please please someone must have pictures of this bike or at least remember it?

Greetings,

I don't recognise the bike from your description, but then I have in the past and still liken Saracen Cycles to British Leyland parts bin raids, so many odd variations there were, even in my area of interest the early nineties it still amazes me when I find something different. Then, if it was a team bike, then it could be any combination of parts, Saracen or not. But, as LGF has already mentioned, the Saracen Lovers Anonymous thread is a place to start.

Oh, but a thought based upon the BL concept and it seems Saracen Cycles of the 90's, build your bike and with that rebuild your own memories, as I discovered fettling my ride brought back memories I had forgotten.

Even looking at Saracen's on this website might be enough to stimulate the retreval of forgotten facts, it is all in there somewhere, you just need the right visual key to drag it out.

Sounds a bit like it could've been a 1991 Traverse Hydrotech as seen below:

Now I know the forks aren't orange, but the frame is black with predominantly orange decals. The original spec would've been DX and LX, and the long stem has the embossed 'S' on it.

Any good?
