The 1990 1st Gen model was simply printed, not embossed...in fact, they may be 3rd gen even.

That's probably because they are broken or in need of a clean. Gripshift were always indexed, albeit not with the most distinct clicks.

The printed grips were self adhesive cork like grips, I always found them to be better than the rubber ones as they didn't spin around the shifters when they got wet. In fact, I still have some NOS printed grip sheets in my collection - £5.15 when new:

Pete thanks for the correction
Mine are not on the bike and unless I place tension on the cable
no clicky is felt like on later models.
