DVD 'V' Blu-Ray

Blue ray is amazing, The quality difference between Blue ray and DVD is similar in VHS and DVD once you have seen a BR disc you wont want to watch another DVD

Also dont go spending a fortune on HDMI cables, ping me a PM and will get you sorted, Have the damn things coming out my ears

Richer Sounds have Blu-ray players from £60, and if you are going surround, a Sony amp for under a ton.
Well worth a look.

Cheaper Blu-ray players will play Blu-ray discs pretty well but DVD and audio CD playback may be compromised. It certainly is on my Philips....

Only real reason to go with a DVD player over Blu-Ray is if it has good DACs and/or you need something that will also play DVD-Audio and/or SACD. I have a NAD T-585 DVD-player sat on top of the blu-ray player, which does all this.

Really - depends how much of an audiophile you are.

Also - as for running surround sound. You need to look into the HDMI interface standard on both your player and your amplifier/AV receiver- there are a couple out there and some don't carry Hi-def audio.

Its looking like Blu-Ray is winning by a head

dbmtb ........ I couldn't quite grasp that mate a wee bit to technical for me but I had thought about the compatibility of all the parts, player, amp and TV.

Cheers guys your brilliant :D

.

to me, blue ray compared with DVD is like when i went from VHS tapes to DVD.........its that good.

early blue ray flicks were nothig too special, but HD quality ones that are out now will blow you away.

i watch them on a 50'' HD TV via my PS3.......

players are around £200, i never buy films though, i always rent from blockbuster, so £4 a pop rather than buy them for £20, pays for itself soon enough that way.

I got a blu ray player from tescos recently for £60. Its as good as the other one we have!

Basically you can run a Blu-ray player through any amp/receiver that has a digital input - either coaxial or optical. Coaxial is best in most cases.

BUT.....

With more expensive kit, it's better to run the audio through HDMI aswell. This means you need to check your amp supports HDMI audio aswell as video - HDMI version 1.3. Many amps -even pricy ones - only support HDMI video. Benefit of HDMI audio transfer is that you get the full Hi-Def Audio experience too. Using other connectors you will only get compressed audio.

But if you don't know what I'm talking about - then just go with a normal COAX connector and the amp you were going to use anyway. I'm running my Blu-ray audio through Coax as my amp is so old it doesn't have HDMI in, of any kind.... and it still sounds pretty good.

If price is not an issue - take a look at this

It's on my shopping list for a day I'm feeling flush.

That link was helpful, while on there I saw the NAD T577 Blu-Ray player.

I then went to another site and read this

NAD have just announced that as a result of falling components prices, the price on their T577 Blu-Ray Player has dropped by £200!

UP DATE : Just found the price for the T 775 A/V Surround Sound Receiver  £2000'ish
