Dumb newby question...

I have a set of record hub Mavic rim 32 spoke tubular 5 speed freewheel and I wanted a set of clinchers as 'spares' in the event of p***tures, I can get a pair of wheels with Normandy high flange hubs with Weinmann aluminium rims 36 spokes (with new tyres on!) for about 50 euros, these have a new dura ace 5 speed freewheel ( think it's the gold one).

My question...will this be ok to run the dura ace as is with my existing 74 Nuovo record derailleur and chain?

Any problems that I won't be aware of (feel free to include comments like 'they are rubbish, walk away' etc)

Ta muchly! :D

Re:

Assuming the hubs are spaced the same it should be ok. Possibly different hubs put the freewheel in a different place in relationship to the spokes but as I guess with 5 speed you will be using non indexed levers it matter not a toss. We never worried about that sort of thing.

Re:

...So the hubs, spokes, rims, tubes and new tyres are a real bargain then :D

Cheers!

true.........the only problem I can see is that the chain that you have might not run to well with the new freewheel. How old is your chain?

Re:

The chain is an unknown quantity, it came with the bike, I measured it for stretch and it is fine, possibly it is about a 1974 chain but with little use.

Are you suggesting that a NOS freewheel might need a new chain?

BITD (1970's) whenever we changed the freewheel we also changed the chain......give it a go and if it skips in the smaller cogs then get a new chain :)
