Dumb cassette question

Do I need to use a spacer when fitting 8sp cassette to a 9sp freehub :?:

I suspect I do, but can't find one for sale anywhere.....

OR - is the 9sp cassette narrow (same width as 8sp) due to narrower chain used?

8 and 9 speed have different spacing between each sprocket so are not compatible. 7 speed will work on an 8 speed freehub with a spacer as they have the same sprocket spacing.

You can run a 9 speed cassette on an 8 speed freehub and vice-versa with no problems. They are totally interchangeable and no spacer is needed.

Overall width of 8 speed and 9 speed are the same, it's just the gaps and sprockets change (and as you assumed hence the chain is narrower).

No spacer needed (unless your freehub uses a 'spacer' as standard anyway)

As above - I've done it myself recently. However for future reference I find my LBS ( a small shop that does a lot of repairs and servicing)very useful for odd bits like spacers. They usually have old ones knocking around in the service area and are very happy to pass them on (often without charge) to regulars.
