Drilling or not a Kona frame? A sacrilege?

Old School Hero
Hi guys,

I have a question that is bothering me last few weeks. I have two Kona frames: 97 Lava Dome 14" and '98 Cinder Cone 18". First one is my wife ride, second will be my second bike - a singlespeed.

Now the problem: as you know both of them have 27,0mm seatpost diameter. For me its kinda hard to find some decent posts (400mm length, light, my with offset and both from good brand) for those two.

I had an idea of drilling the frame with a special tool to 27,2mm - so there are lots of posts in this size.

What do you think? Would it be too much for Kona fans? :?

Cheers

Don't drill the frame-it would be a BIG MISTAKE! Be patient and the right size seatpost will come to you. I also wouldn't recommend shimming a smaller one to fit.

its not hard to find a good post for that dia. e.g. thomson makes them
http://www.lhthomson.com/elite_sizes.asp
tune makes them

roox makes them

and there are several other options availabel too.

you dont drill a seat tube  you ream it with a seat tube reamer.but you would be far better to look for a decent 27.0 post.

I have done this - 26.8 IRD turned on a lathe down to 26.4. No problems so far. Depends on the wall thickness of the post. Proceed at your own risk.
