I think you'll find the technical term is a tapping stick

No no no no no NO! Its actually big rubber whacker, it used to say so on the big wooden tool board at my old workplace. I read it a lot, the slot was always emtpy.

To answer the questions:

Yes, the frame has iscg03 mounts, and I'm using them, as well as the BB due tot he position and size.

No, there is no rear wheel on in those pics, I was in the process of fitting new bearings and freehub.

At is stands I have fitted an extra spacer -S) and it lines up. Yet to take it for a spin though. I know is not the right thing to do but it's the only way to space the chainrings out.

As for whether I need one, I've had a lot of chain slap etc. Looking at altenative chain devices, they're designed the same way, a 2.5mm steel plate, so I can't see anything would be different...
