If not a problem and caring only about having a table,then may as well sand it off completely like mr gibble says.

It just sounded like you had something you felt was worthy to own,whereas sanding it off completely would ruin any worth it may have.
But if thats not the case then sanding is the answer
 
It depends on the nature of the dents, etc.

There is a difference between 'damage' and wear and tear consistent with age and enhancing character.

With the items in question I would be tempted to do as little as possible to it to make it serviceable. Oil not varnish for my taste.

I lived in Denmark and these are not rare there, they fit well in the surrounds of wooden floors and minimalist decor.
