From day one get it sleeping in a cage in the kitchen(or wherever you want it to sleep)
I hadn't tried this with any of my previous dogs, but i did with my current pooch and it works a treat.
First couple of nights will involve a bit of whinning etc.
But because the dog sleeps in the cage it will come to know it as its safe place(do not place the dog in the cage as a punishment).
As a result the dog can go in the cage while you are out and he/she won't be able to eat kitchens or furniture :D

Definately worth doing

As soon as he's innoculated, take him to a quiet, open space and off the lead - his instinct will be to follow you and he can't run very far or fast. Practise recalls with lots of tasty titbits. Did this with all our puppies and they happily walk off lead.
Alternatively, keep him on a lead at all times until he's adolescent and then the first time you let him go, he'll be off, hard to catch and won't want to come back ;-)

To late the missis treats him like a baby
He responds to my tone of voice but gets what he wants from her in a iota
the best laid plans always fook up when my missis gets involved
